Reconnecting with The Algarve...
It had been 20 years since I last stepped onto Portuguese soil, yet the moment I felt the Algarve sunshine on my skin, it was as though no time had passed. Once a regular retreat for me—a quick hop from the UK—the Algarve had always felt like a second home. But somewhere along the way, amidst life’s whirlwind and the lure of new destinations, it faded from view.
This trip changed everything.
The Algarve has a rare gift: the power to offer a little bit of everything. Golden beaches, gentle coastal charm, and a quiet, refined luxury that never feels forced. It’s a destination equally suited to unwinding or indulging—and now, having returned, I can’t help but ask myself: Why did I stay away so long?
Day One: From Alvor to Armação de Pêra
Our four-day escape began in the charming town of Alvor, just an hour’s drive from Faro. We checked into Tivoli Alvor, a stylish all-inclusive resort that gave us exactly what we needed after a travel day: spacious modern rooms, great food, and genuinely warm hospitality.
That afternoon, we moved on to Armação de Pêra to experience the renowned Vila Vita Parc. Nestled in lush botanical gardens with sweeping Atlantic views, this five-star haven is the very definition of understated elegance. Every detail is beautifully curated, making it the perfect place to exhale and unwind.
Nearby, we popped over to see the White Shell Beach Villas—a tranquil collection of contemporary, design-led villas that offer privacy, calm, and effortless style. A beautiful alternative for those who prefer a more independent stay without sacrificing luxury.
Day Two: Cliffs, Coastlines & Class
Our next stop was Albufeira, where we visited the Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Hotel Spa. This expansive beachfront resort manages to balance grandeur with an inviting, family-friendly warmth.
Later, we arrived at the legendary Pine Cliffs Resort, nestled amid pine groves and perched above dramatic red cliffs. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and with impeccable service and elegant design, it became one of the standout highlights of the trip.
Day Three: Marina Style & Inland Serenity
We dedicated our third day to Vilamoura, a sophisticated marina town that blends seaside glamour with relaxed charm. We visited several standout properties, including the laid-back Hilton Vilamoura, the luxurious Domes Lake Algarve, and enjoyed a long, sun-soaked lunch at the chic Tivoli Marina Vilamoura.
From there, it was on to Conrad Algarve in Quinta do Lago—a haven of contemporary elegance, where every touch feels thoughtfully considered.
To end the day, we journeyed inland to the serene Viceroy at Ombria. This newly opened resort is a hidden gem: beautifully designed, grounded in nature, and oozing quiet luxury. The perfect retreat.
Day Four: Coastlines & Dream Villas
On our final day, we returned to the coast to explore the exclusive enclaves of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. From grand, traditional hotels to sleek townhouses and ultra-luxurious private villas, each property we visited had its own distinctive charm, but all shared the Algarve’s signature sun-drenched beauty and timeless appeal.
Final Reflections
This trip rekindled everything I once loved about the Algarve: the light, the landscapes, the food, and that unshakeable sense of calm. In just four days, we experienced so much—rediscovered old favourites, uncovered new gems, and indulged in the kind of relaxed luxury that’s hard to find elsewhere.
The only question that remains?
Why did I ever wait so long to return?
